K.C. Das: The sweetest affair of Bengal since 1860’s

Delicacies from KC Das

It was the best of times for Bengal in the second half of the nineteenth century. Bengal’s resurgence was at its height

From fine arts-commerce, to culture-industry, from literature to science, in all things there was a glorious flowering of exuberant excellence.

And the spirit of this era touched the world of confectionery too. In the 1860s, the man who chose this area to engage his genius was Nobin Chandra Das, who is known as the ‘Columbus of Rosogolla’

Legend says that once Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was gifted a pot of rosogollas. Having nibbled at it, Tagore had asked if it was from Nobin Chandra Das’s shop in Bagbazar. Upon being told it wasn’t, he is known to have said, “If you must feed me rosogollas, make sure it’s from Nobin’s.”

From a tiny, obscure corner of Bagbazar in North Kolkata, set up in 1866, the brand “KC Das” is now has innumerable outlets throughout India.

Dhiman Das, the predecessor of the legendary Nobin Chandra Das, became a director of K C Das at a very young age of 21 in 1993. Since then he dedicated himself in nourishing the legacy of his great great grandfather.

Besides, rasgulla travelled the world for the first time after it was canned in 1930 by K C Das, who took over the business from his father N C Das.

At present, the company sells over 75 varieties of sweets and snacks in their 23 shops that include seven in Kolkata and 16 in Bengaluru with over 100 employees. And one of the best thing is that the traditional white uniform of the staff was changed to red and white with the help of a fashion designer. They also decorated the shops with traditional artifacts and wrote the brand name in 22 languages implying that KC Das belongs to the entire India.

They have also introduced a number of Vegetarian snacks along with their innumerable traditional mistis.
