Anyone up for Netaji er Peyaji…?

Located at 158 Bidhan Sarani

An essential bangali adda is incomplete without exchange of political debates over fried tele bhaja and a cup of piping hot tea in matir bhaar. Ask me…I can even become a better politician than Modiji if given a cup of good bharer cha!!

Oh and when we speak of tele bhaja and chanachur, Lakshmi Narayan Shaw & Sons of North Kolkata is the name we can all agree upon. Mr. Khedu Shaw started this establishment in 1918 so not only me or you, even Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose vouched for this shop.

It is said that, Netaji’s favourite snack was muri (puffed rice) and telebhaja. He often came to Laxmi Narayan Shaw & Sons from his college for telebhaja. The owner Khedu Shaw had a good relationship with Netaji and their connection with telebhaja remained eternal.

Gradually, when Khedu Shaw was becoming a close one of Netaji, Lakshmi Narayan Shaw & Sons soon made its way to provide help to the secret meetings of Bengal’s revolutionaries. History says that Shaw used to carry a kettle of hot tea and telebhaja himself to these meetings.

Located at 158 Bidhan Sarani, Laxmi Narayan Shaw is also popularly known as Netaji’s Telebhaja shop. It has been there for more than a century and still going strong selling evening good amount of tele bhaja to all. Most likely you’ll find a good crowd in front of it, making the whole roadside lively. Shaw family distributes free telebhaja on 23rd January every year on the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Even today, people refer this shop and its tele bhajas as Netaji r peyaji — umm quite amusing, isn’t it?
