A legend that endured for centuries… Radhu Babu’s tea shop

It is said that in the year 1933 Radha Kishore Datta who was an ardent and firebrand revolutionary devoted to the cause of India’s freedom had migrated to Kolkata from Purulia via Bankura to set up one of Kolkata’s of the first tea shop that came to be known as Radhu Babu Chayer Dokan.

His legendary shop had been visited by Russi Mody, Uttam Kumar, Raj Kapoor and many other luminaries during the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Radhababu passed away in 1987 and left his legacy with his brother Bijon Behari Dutta and his sons and nephew Satyasundar and Somnath.

Today, this shop sell more than 20 items each day combining bread, eggs and over almost 600 cups of tea to the ever lasting enthusiastics.

The legendary tea shop across the street still exists, defiant in its shabbiness, never deviating an inch from its tea, which is my love.

Best Food item’s to look out for:

• Mutton Stew

• Mutton Korma

• Chicken Roast

• Chicken cutlet

• Mutton Cutlet

• Special Fish Fry

• Fish Finger

-And obviously the ‘Chaa’.

But at the end what I felt was the quality of the tea might have deteriorated.
